Govt Officials in Islamabad Ordered to Obtain Driving Licences by October 1 — Non-Compliance to Result in Legal Action

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Capital Police have issued a strict warning to all government officers and officials: obtain valid driving licences by October 1, 2025, or face legal action. The directive comes after an operation revealed that a significant number of civil servants were driving vehicles and motorcycles without licences.

The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) recently launched an operation around the Pakistan Secretariat following multiple complaints of chaotic and illegal parking that was obstructing traffic flow. Police teams, equipped with lifters, cleared vehicles parked along roads and shifted dozens of motorcycles and cars to alternate locations. Some vehicles were also taken into custody for repeated violations.

During the crackdown, it was discovered that several of the impounded vehicles belonged to senior government officials. When asked to produce their driving licences, many failed to comply. As a result, tickets were issued, and the matter was escalated to higher authorities.

Senior officers later ordered the release of the vehicles but issued a strong warning to the officials, reminding them that no one is above the law. They also directed government employees to immediately apply for and obtain driving licences before the October deadline.

Under the law, the police are empowered to impound vehicles and impose heavy fines on individuals driving without valid licences. To make compliance easier, the ITP has announced the deployment of four mobile facilitation vans outside major government offices, including the Pak-Secretariat and offices along Constitution Avenue. These mobile units will help officers conveniently obtain their licences at their workplace.

The police further confirmed that the issue will also be formally raised with ministries and government departments to ensure 100% compliance across all institutions.

A senior police official stated, “Driving without a valid licence is a violation of the law, and even government officers are not exempt. The deadline is firm — after October 1, violators will face legal action.”
